Danylo Yavkostyshyn, known in the sumo world as Onishiki, made history by becoming the first Ukrainian to win one of Japan’s most prestigious tournaments: the Emperor’s Cup. At just 21 years old, Danylo is also the first European in almost eight years to achieve such a feat.
Originally from Vinnytsia, Danylo was interested in sumo from a young age, training alongside judo and freestyle wrestling. Before moving to Japan, he became European champion in 2019 and won multiple Ukrainian titles.
In 2022, following the escalation of war in Ukraine, Danylo and his family initially relocated to Germany. He later decided to move to Japan on his own, where he was supported by an acquaintance from the sports world. Despite language barriers, he began a professional sumo career and quickly became known among professionals.
At the Fukuoka tournament, Danylo scored 12 wins out of 15, defeating the reigning Mongolian champion in the finals. This brought him close to the rank of Ozeki—the second highest sumo title. Experts suggest he could become the first European Yokozuna—the sport’s highest accolade.
His ring name, Onishiki, symbolically includes the character for “blue”, representing Ukraine’s flag. Danylo stands out due to his unique technical approach and dedication. His signature move is the “Oshidashi” (frontal push out). He demonstrates precision, technique, and a low stance, allowing him to compete effectively against larger opponents.
Onishiki’s success has inspired other Ukrainian sumo representatives, such as Serhii Sokolovskyi (Shishi) and Japanese sumo wrestler Oho, who has Ukrainian ancestry. Legendary wrestler Taiho Koki (Ivan Boryshko) also remains a symbol of greatness and cultural pride, having set records during the 20th century.
Danylo’s victory in a Japanese tournament is a significant milestone for Ukrainian sports and Ukrainian-Japanese relations. It exemplifies cultural integration and proves that success knows no borders.
