US Prepares for Military Operation Against Venezuela: The Motives Behind Trump's Plans

US President Donald Trump threatens Venezuela with missile strikes; the US military presence increases to 10,000 troops. The potential conflict involves anti-narcotics efforts, oil interests, and leverage over Russia with regard to Ukraine.

The world is on the brink of a new military conflict as the US considers launching missile strikes against Venezuela. President Donald Trump has identified key targets such as ports, airports, naval bases and runways, according to the Wall Street Journal. Officially, the operation is presented as an anti-narcotics measure, but observers suggest it is also aimed at securing control over Venezuela's vast oil reserves—a major strategic interest for the United States and part of its bargaining strategy with Russia over Ukraine.

The current US military presence in the Caribbean stands at 10,000 personnel. Trump has authorized the Pentagon to take action against Latin American drug cartels, aiming primarily to dismantle Venezuelan organizations alleged to be headed by senior military officials.

Facing mounting pressure, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has sought support from allies, particularly Russia and China. Reports indicate Maduro has requested military and defense system assistance from Russia; however, much of Venezuela's arsenal is reportedly outdated. Experts believe Russia is unlikely to intervene directly in a US-Venezuela military conflict.

The Venezuela situation underscores ongoing geopolitical rivalry between the US, Russia and China. Many analysts point out that while narcotics enforcement is the official justification, Washington's real goal may be to gain leverage over oil markets—which directly affects Ukraine's support and global sanctions against Russia.

Some experts caution that a US focus on Venezuela could divert attention from the conflict in Ukraine and reduce military and financial support to Kyiv. On the other hand, if the US gains control over Venezuela's oil, it could impact Russia's economy by lowering global oil prices. The debate continues as to which strategy Trump will pursue and how it may affect Ukraine's interests.
