Ukraine Peace Talks: Negotiations, Russia’s Position and the Role of the US

Analysis of the latest Ukraine peace talks, changes in Russia's approach, the role of the US, and prospects for a Zelensky-Trump meeting.

Does the so-called Swiss peace process change Russia's approach to the war in Ukraine? Is it linked to Russia’s ongoing efforts to undermine Ukraine’s energy system? Experts note that the Kremlin’s objectives have remained stable for the fourth consecutive year.

Recently, Russia rejected a revised peace plan of 19 points developed with the US. According to Western media, further talks are ongoing in the UAE, while Russia signals some concessions, such as possible freezing of the front line in two regions and joint arrangements regarding the Kakhovka hydro plant and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. However, Russia’s core stance remains unchanged.

Russia continues military pressure, aiming to push Ukraine towards a settlement on terms beneficial to the Kremlin. Efforts to influence Ukrainian politics and society are also observed, notably via the media landscape. Ukraine acknowledges challenges in mobilization and defense and highlights the need for further reforms.

There is ongoing discussion of a possible meeting between the Ukrainian and US presidents, but a shared position is lacking. Ukrainian authorities do not accept several US proposals, including neutrality. Both Russia and Ukraine are facing resource strains in the prolonged conflict.

At present, the negotiation process is highly dynamic. Despite ongoing exchanges, major differences persist, making a swift agreement unlikely.
