Renowned journalist, blogger and writer Ostap Drozdov discusses why global players largely ignore Ukraine's peace initiatives. He points out that Ukrainian proposals are rarely discussed at the highest international levels, unlike Western or Russian plans. Drozdov stresses the lack of state vision and strong negotiating positions, highlighting that consequences of past corruption and looting have weakened Ukraine's stance.
Drozdov notes that the "victory plan" and "resilience plan" have been in effect for a year, but are barely visible on the international stage. He observes that nowadays the "law of force" prevails over the "force of law," and only strong actors are considered in diplomacy. According to Drozdov, Ukraine's weakness led to its initiatives being neglected.
He also comments on Donald Trump’s latest statement suggesting Russia’s main concession in the conflict is merely ceasing hostilities. Drozdov says Western players view compromise as Russia’s concession rather than broad agreements with Ukraine. Diplomatic contacts continue in different formats, including US, Ukraine, and Russia.
Public opinion is another important topic. Recent polls show President Volodymyr Zelensky and Valerii Zaluzhnyi share equal leading positions, with Kyrylo Budanov also gaining popularity. Drozdov notes the government no longer enjoys unchallenged support, and political dynamics could change dramatically if elections are held.
Finally, the expert predicts corruption scandals will significantly impact electoral ratings, and the list of potential candidates is yet to be clarified even at the level of personal statements.
