On December 1, negotiations between Ukraine and the United States concluded in Florida. The US delegation was led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Both sides noted productive talks but emphasized the need for further work and additional meetings to reach a final peace agreement.
The Ukrainian side highlighted substantial progress towards a dignified peace and closer alignment with Washington. All critical issues for Ukraine were reportedly discussed, with the US providing significant support. Security guarantees for Ukraine remain on the agenda for further discussion.
However, the final text of a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia has not been agreed upon. Russia insists on international recognition of its control over occupied territories and resolution of their future status. Ukraine maintains that talks must be based on the current front line, and its course towards joining NATO remains enshrined in its constitution.
President Zelensky emphasized the constructive nature of the talks and expects a full report from the delegation. Donald Trump, commenting on the negotiations, pointed to the ongoing corruption difficulties in Ukraine but admitted there is a good chance for a successful agreement.
Military issues also remain central: Russian forces have gained a tactical advantage in drone warfare, supported by Chinese supplies, as reported by Western media. Ukraine is working to strengthen its own capabilities in response to new challenges.
Other topics included elections in Ukraine (one of Russia’s demands), candidates for the position of the head of the Ukrainian presidential office, and developments in foreign policy. There were also reports of an incident with a Turkish tanker off Senegal, drone attacks on Ukraine, and Western military-technical support for Poland.
Overall, the Florida negotiations marked an important step towards long-term peace, but the key decisions still lie ahead.
