On December 2, at the Center for Public Analytics "Vezha," Valeriy Klochok hosted Yevhen Magda, director of the Institute of World Policy, for a discussion on international and domestic issues concerning Ukraine. The main topic was a statement by Johann Wadephul, a representative of the German Foreign Ministry, about the potential need for a referendum on Ukraine’s territories and the necessity of compromise to achieve peace. Similar ideas have also been raised repeatedly by Vladimir Putin.
Yevhen Magda noted that such proposals are a subject of ongoing debate among European politicians, who must balance support for Ukraine with their own interests and constraints. He emphasized that Berlin’s position is not final and requires consultation with France, while Poland’s role in negotiations remains limited, which does not benefit Ukraine’s interests.
The discussion also highlighted Ukraine’s financial difficulties and the limitations of Western support, with repeated emphasis on Ukraine’s need for external funding to cover major social expenses. Delays and inadequacies in European defense spending and military aid deliveries, as compared to NATO standards, were also discussed.
Concerning Ukrainian-Polish relations, the experts acknowledged the complexity of historical issues and the need for a constructive approach to resolving disputes. Economic cooperation between Poland and Germany, particularly in the energy sector, continues to grow despite political disagreements.
In conclusion, Magda stressed the importance of protecting Ukraine's interests in talks with international partners and called for ongoing public dialogue about the nation’s future.
