Russia Increases Pressure on Ukraine Amid Economic Crisis and Stalled Negotiations

The US believes Putin wants peace, but Kremlin statements and Russia's economic troubles suggest otherwise. Situation analysis.

Recent statements from US leadership about the likelihood of peace between Russia and Ukraine contrast sharply with Kremlin rhetoric. The American president trusts his team’s impression that Vladimir Putin wants to end the war. However, there has been no progress at negotiations in Moscow, and a concrete peace plan was reportedly not even discussed, according to Russian officials.

Russian authorities explicitly reject compromise, while President Putin continues to threaten European countries with nuclear war. In a new interview, Putin insists that Russia will seize Donbas and other regions of Ukraine by military or any other means, signaling ongoing hostilities until these objectives are met.

At the same time, frustration is rising inside Russia over a deteriorating economy. Numerous Russian regions are reducing payments both to war participants and the families of those killed at the front. According to Russia’s Ministry of Finance, oil and gas revenues fell dramatically in November—down 34% compared to the previous year. The deficit-ridden Russian budget is increasingly covered by cuts to social expenditures, a situation even acknowledged by pro-Kremlin propagandists.

These developments point to a mounting crisis and growing social discontent in Russia. The Kremlin aims to leverage international pressure and Western fatigue to force Ukraine’s capitulation. According to the author, Ukraine urgently needs military reform, increased strikes on Russian infrastructure, and improved government efficiency to counter further aggression and avoid defeat.

Volunteer and charitable initiatives are supporting the front; the author urges continued backing of Ukrainian forces. Russia’s military and socio-economic crisis creates a window of opportunity for Ukraine, but only if it acts decisively and effectively.
