German magazine Der Spiegel published a leaked conversation among European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. They discussed security issues, Western support for Ukraine, and the potential loss of U.S. backing. Macron, Merz, Rutte, Stubb, and other EU officials stressed the need to protect Zelensky, though it was unclear if this referred to all of Ukraine.
Participants expressed concerns that the United States could betray both Ukraine and Europe regarding territorial issues and security guarantees. Reports indicate negotiations are at a standstill. Russia is demanding Ukrainian concessions, such as the removal of defensive fortifications in Kyiv and Odesa—demands regarded as unacceptable.
Meanwhile, Europe is working to transfer frozen Russian assets and offer Ukraine loans secured by the EU budget. Low-cost airlines say they will quickly resume flights to Ukraine once the war ends.
Leaders are discussing how to counter Russian pressure, maintain support for Ukraine, and avoid manipulation. The role of Trump and his team in Ukraine negotiations is also under review. Experts emphasize prolonged talks help Putin buy time.
