Protests in Russia over tax hikes and utility problems amid the war

An overview of protests in Russia against rising taxes and tariffs, the economic crisis, and support for Ukraine’s military with drones.

Russia has seen renewed protest activity as residents of Irkutsk rallied against tax and utility hikes. Nearly 200 people joined the protest—considered significant by Russian standards. Although the demonstration was formally in support of President Putin, participants voiced demands to halt the economic crisis.

Meanwhile, in Angarsk, Irkutsk region, an accident at CHP-9 left the city without heating as temperatures dropped to -19 to -20°C. This incident highlighted ongoing issues with Russia’s communal infrastructure, coming as authorities increase tax pressure to fund the ongoing war against Ukraine.

Russian propagandists now acknowledge the economy’s "negative growth" as oil prices fall and state spending rises. Further inflation and increases in VAT and utility tariffs are expected in 2024 due to mounting wartime costs.

In Ukraine, volunteers and activists continue fundraising efforts to supply the military with new FPV drones, boosting defensive capabilities and protecting critical infrastructure. Ukrainian troops express gratitude for this support, emphasizing its life-saving impact and importance for mission success.

Despite serious challenges, Ukrainian society is called upon to unite and support the military further, as victory depends on collective effort and necessary reforms in defense and governance.
