Ostap Drozdov: Ukraine Needs Open Discussion on Peace Terms and Political Future

Journalist Ostap Drozdov urges transparency in peace talks and elections, highlighting the role of public involvement in key decisions.

Well-known journalist, blogger, and writer Ostap Drozdov, in an interview with Radio UA Chicago, raised the issue of transparency in the negotiations for ending the war and Ukraine’s political future. Drozdov emphasized that the main proposals for peace currently discussed among Ukraine, the US, Europe, and Russia are kept closed from public scrutiny.

He pointed out that Ukrainians often learn about such plans from Western media, not official national sources. In his view, Ukrainian citizens should be actively engaged in analyzing and debating the key points of peace initiatives, allowing the society to influence important decisions.

The topics under discussion include territorial concessions along the current frontline, the possible creation of a demilitarized zone, and holding elections in wartime. Drozdov was skeptical about recent government statements regarding the prospect of elections, noting that leadership positions tend to rapidly shift according to the political situation.

The journalist stressed that the future security guarantees for Ukraine also remain unclear, despite the signing of numerous international agreements. He called on the authorities for honest dialogue with the society and experts instead of making decisions in a narrow circle.

The interview also touched on the international activity of Ukraine’s leader, in particular President Zelensky's European tour. Drozdov questioned the tangible results of such diplomacy, suggesting that no significant breakthroughs towards ending the war have yet been achieved.

Finally, Drozdov highlighted the inevitability of difficult choices on peace terms and underscored the importance of public participation in shaping those decisions.
