New Corruption Scandal in Hungary: Teen Beatings in State Center Spark Political Crisis Ahead of Elections

A political scandal erupted in Hungary before the elections after video emerged showing minors being beaten in a Budapest state center. The incident has increased pressure on Viktor Orban's government and triggered opposition calls for his resignation.

A new political scandal has erupted in Hungary ahead of the elections. The scandal broke after a video surfaced showing minors being beaten at a state center in Budapest, leading to public outrage and calls for PM Viktor Orban's resignation.

Seven people have been detained so far, though no official charges have been made. Prosecutors are investigating the former center director for suspected fake employment schemes, links to human trafficking, and organizing prostitution. The social services agency overseeing the center, reporting to the Ministry of Interior, has declined to comment.

In response, the government announced that all juvenile care institutions will now be overseen directly by the police, citing failures of social services to prevent violence. The opposition, led by Peter Magyar, is demanding Orban’s resignation and has organized protest rallies. Meanwhile, the Tisza party has gained popularity during the controversy but faces its own challenges.

Recent polls show the gap between Fidesz and Tisza is narrowing, with Fidesz at 47% and Tisza at 40%. In addition, the government has rolled out new social programs to boost its standing ahead of the elections.

The scandal places additional pressure on Orban’s government and could significantly affect the upcoming elections. Authorities have transferred control of juvenile centers to the police, signaling the possibility of broader social sector reforms. Incidents like this may also draw further EU and human rights criticism of Hungary.
