A sudden and bold statement about Ukraine's readiness to leave Donbas appeared in French media Le Monde, quoting Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Presidential Office. Although Podolyak is not Ukraine's main negotiator, his words sparked a significant reaction, as such rhetoric has long been awaited by Russia and some Western politicians.
The statement emphasizes that Ukraine would only step back from Donbas if Russia also withdrew from its positions to the same extent. Official Kyiv therefore rejects any scenario in which Ukraine retreats but Russia remains. This stance is presented as a counterproposal to the plan supported by Donald Trump.
Public opinion remains unclear, as there are no genuine sociological surveys on the issue. Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelensky has, for the first time, spoken about the possibility of a referendum regarding territorial concessions.
The analyst also notes that such strong statements are often used in political strategy to "test" the reactions of society and international partners. Western leaders advise Ukraine to set conditions that Russia is unlikely to fulfill, to avoid unilateral concessions.
At the same time, the fight to secure financial support from the EU continues, especially amid positions held by specific prime ministers. The activities of Russian lobbyists in Europe fuel discussions about possible corruption schemes and blocking aid for Ukraine. Still, the European prosecutor's office is monitoring potential interference attempts.
Overall, Podolyak's statement has sparked wide debate about a fair compromise, future talks with Russia, and the international community's role in supporting Ukraine.
