Political Situation in the US: Prospects for Donald Trump and the Position on Ukraine

Analysis of the current political situation in the US, prospects for Donald Trump, and the impact of internal processes on Ukraine policy.

The United States is currently experiencing a complex domestic political situation for Donald Trump. Despite the anticipated release of the Epstein tapes and declining approval ratings, Trump still retains a majority in Congress at least until next fall. At present, there is no threat of impeachment proceedings against him, even considering internal divisions within the Republican Party. Experts note that if Trump’s ratings continue to fall, he could lose political authority and become a "lame duck," a president with limited influence on country processes.

The Republican Party in the US is more of a coalition of political clans than a traditional ideological organization. For a long time, the party supported Trump due to his influence on voters. However, as his popularity wanes, more congressmen are seeking alternative ways to position themselves.

A decline in Trump’s authority will strengthen opposition even within the party and increase judicial resistance to his actions. The loss of influence could also impact foreign policy, particularly towards Ukraine. Trump may seek to compensate by taking stricter measures or through more active foreign policy steps.

Ukrainian experts point out that Trump’s position on Ukraine is unlikely to become pro-Ukrainian, especially given possible deals with Russia. Ukraine must clearly determine its goals in relations with the US: avoid the imposition of unacceptable solutions, lobby for the sale of weapons, maintain constructive dialogue, and prevent any openly hostile course.

Changes in US foreign policy are to be expected regardless of who becomes president, as the trend towards reducing its global role is increasingly evident. Ukraine must adapt to these changes and build dialogue reflecting the new realities.
