Latest Updates on Peace Talks, European Meetings, and the Situation on the Ukrainian Front

Analysis of ongoing peace talks, European leaders’ meetings, positions on Donbas, the energy crisis in Odesa, and international implications.

On December 12, presenter Valeriy Klychok summarized the progress in peace efforts aimed at ending the Russian-Ukrainian war, focusing on key negotiations in Europe. The Ukrainian delegation, possibly joined by President Zelensky, is expected to visit Paris on Saturday, with Zelensky set to travel to Berlin on Monday to meet with leaders known as the “Euro-trio” — including Macron and Keir Starmer. It remains unclear if US representatives will join the discussions.

One main issue is the future status of Donbas. Putin’s aide Ushakov suggested the possible withdrawal of Russian troops from a potential demilitarized zone in Donbas, though Russian National Guard forces might remain. While Ukraine previously categorically rejected such scenarios, talks on the region's status, including the option of a referendum, are ongoing. The Kremlin maintains it will control Donbas sooner or later.

European media reported a potential EU membership for Ukraine by 2027, although no official confirmation has come from EU officials. Other topics include continued attacks on Odesa’s infrastructure, where power outages persist due to Russian missile strikes on substations.

On the front, Ukrainian forces continue advances near Kupiansk, encircling over 200 Russian troops. Zelensky visited the frontlines, awarded soldiers, and recorded a brief message from the site.

Germany summoned the Russian ambassador over destabilization activities ahead of elections. In the Caspian Sea, special operations forces struck sanctioned vessels transporting arms for Russia.

There are also initiatives to tighten controls on the shadow fleet transporting Russian oil. Politically, debates continue over the US role and internal struggles in the White House.
