An expert voiced a significant possibility that active hostilities in Ukraine could end by the end of this year, highlighting the challenging front-line situation. He noted President Zelensky’s recent visit to Kupyansk was both bold and symbolic, showing Ukraine’s readiness for dialogue and negotiations. The expert stressed that the main issue now is moving toward a frozen conflict, which Europe resists but faces strong pressure from the US and also on Ukraine via weapon and resource restrictions.
The expert emphasized there is no question of capitulation; instead, discussions about compromises are ongoing. Military funding for Ukrainian forces remains unchanged, raising concerns about proper support. According to the expert, Zelensky is diplomatically defending Ukraine’s position in talks with Europeans, Americans, and Russians.
He also discussed chances for mass ceasefire or “freezing” of the conflict, especially as both sides face resource exhaustion. The expert believes compromise solutions are possible and a ceasefire could be reached this year, with strong US interest. However, Russia also seeks conditions beneficial to itself, making for a complex diplomatic landscape.
Special attention was given to debates regarding possible referenda and the fate of Donbas territory, which might become a demilitarized zone. Questions remain regarding the security and control of these areas.
The expert also noted that current security guarantees signed with various countries are more declarative than binding. However, if a binding security pact is signed with the United States, it could fundamentally improve Ukraine’s position.
