Key Points of Negotiations: Donbas, Security Guarantees, Christmas Truce, and the Role of the US and Trump

An overview of the main issues in Donbas negotiations, Zelensky's statements, the positions of the US, Russia, and Trump, and the prospects for a Christmas truce.

Negotiations on a peaceful resolution in Donbas continue between Ukraine, the US, and Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that Ukraine will not recognize Donbas as Russian, either de facto or de jure. There are five key disputed issues with Russia, while 90% of positions are agreed with the US side.

The Americans promise strong measures if agreements are violated, including weapons support and sanctions. Russia disagrees with several key points, such as refusing foreign military presence in Ukraine and no compromise on Donbas. The proposal includes creating a free economic zone without transferring control to Russia.

Zelensky also stated that a referendum on Donbas will not be held currently, but elections are possible after peace is reached. The US emphasizes the importance of security guarantees for Ukraine, similar to NATO Article 5, to be legally approved by Congress.

Trump is consulting both sides and is optimistic about reaching agreements with Putin before Christmas, but suggests tight deadlines. The sides’ proposals focus on peace settlement, security, and actual aid to Ukraine.

The main focus is now on preparing key documents, security guarantees, occupation issues in Donbas, and the possibility of a Christmas truce. Further developments depend on direct negotiations between the US, Russia, and Ukraine.
