On December 16, the Center for Public Analytics "Vezha" discussed with former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ohryzko the recent statements by European countries and the US regarding security guarantees for Ukraine.
Ohryzko emphasized that a new coalition of European countries willing to fight alongside Ukraine for independence and freedom is taking shape. According to him, this could evolve into a new security alliance similar to a "European NATO," consisting of nations capable of effectively defending themselves and their allies. He noted that the current documents lack specifics regarding legally binding guarantees.
The expert drew attention to the vague language used in the announced guarantees, comparing them to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty. In his view, Ukraine needs clearly defined guarantees that prescribe concrete actions in case of aggression.
Ohryzko also commented on intentions by the US to propose a new legislative initiative to support Ukraine's security, stressing the importance of specifying the duration of such guarantees. He was skeptical about time-limited security commitments, asserting that only indefinite, firmly agreed obligations can ensure stability.
The interview also covered Russia's position—recent Kremlin statements reveal inconsistency and a reluctance to make essential concessions on occupied territories. Ohryzko sees this as part of a strategy to create chaos and manipulate negotiations.
The expert concluded that Ukraine's security must rest on close partnership with Europe, building a strong army, and achieving practical guarantees through effective agreements rather than mere declarations.
