Russia rejects Christmas truce: reactions and new security initiatives for Ukraine

Peskov stated Russia will not agree to a Christmas ceasefire; long-term security guarantees for Ukraine are being discussed.

Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced that Russia refuses the proposed Christmas truce. Peskov emphasized that Russia seeks not a temporary ceasefire but a lasting peace on its own terms. He argued that a ceasefire would only allow Ukraine to regroup for further hostilities.

Experts believe Russia aims to pressure Ukraine and achieve favorable terms, especially a freeze of the conflict. The international community, including the US and European nations, is increasing pressure on Moscow through sanctions and diplomatic efforts.

Amid Russia's refusal, a new European security guarantees plan for Ukraine is under discussion. The project includes military assistance, forming multinational forces for protection, ceasefire monitoring, guarantees of response in case of renewed aggression, financial support for reconstruction, and backing Ukraine's EU accession.

Summit participants stress that ending the war requires legal commitments to Ukraine. Meetings with US officials highlight continued international support for Ukraine. Experts note the effectiveness of these new initiatives will depend on further practical actions by governments.
