Today, President Donald Trump of the United States met with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine at the Mar-a-Lago residence. Many experts consider this meeting to be of historic significance, as it may define the main parameters of a future peace agreement between the US, Russia, and Ukraine.
Prior to the talks, Trump held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov, Russia agreed to create two working groups: one focused on ending the Russia-Ukraine war and another on economic cooperation among Ukraine, Russia, and the US. Meanwhile, Kyiv and Washington are discussing security guarantees for Ukraine, which Trump intends to present to the US Congress.
Despite Trump’s stated intention to quickly end the conflict, the sides have not yet agreed on the timing and nature of the truce. Unverified reports suggest a possible demilitarization of part of the Donbas in 2026 and elections being held in those regions. This could see control of Donbas pass to Russia without fighting, raising concerns in Kyiv.
The Ukrainian President’s Office has already commented, emphasizing the importance of clarifying Russia’s real intentions. The involvement of European leaders at the talks and the discussion of frozen Russian assets indicate the complexity and multilayered nature of the process.
President Trump made cautious statements, refraining from bold gestures and avoiding setting deadlines. He stressed that European countries will play a key role in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
Further negotiations will continue in the framework of special working groups. Observers note the threat of a protracted process, which aligns with Russia’s diplomatic tactics. Final agreements will depend on Moscow’s stance and the US’s willingness to pressure its partners, as well as Ukraine’s ability to defend its interests.
A press conference is scheduled following the meeting, where more details and the next steps in the peace process may be revealed.
