Ukraine's president has officially appointed Kyrylo Budanov as the head of the president’s office, filling the vacancy that followed the resignation of Andriy Yermak. The president stated that Ukraine needs greater focus on security, defense development, and diplomacy during the ongoing war.
Budanov brings substantial experience in the military and security sphere. The president tasked him, together with other key officials, to develop strategic foundations for Ukraine’s defense and present proposals for further strengthening the state.
This appointment raises questions about the future leadership of the Main Intelligence Directorate, which is currently left without a chief, as well as about the team that will form around Budanov. Among possible leadership candidates, current deputy Pavlo Palisa is noted for his initiatives on army reform.
Experts highlight the challenge of Budanov’s transition from military to political leadership. Special attention is given to the urgent need for military reform, updated mobilization policies, training processes, and a shift towards merit-based appointments.
The article also touches on the issue of the balance of power, emphasizing that the president's office should function as a supporting body for the president and not as an independent power center, in accordance with Ukraine's Constitution.
Significant internal changes are anticipated due to the war. It is believed that the effectiveness of new appointments and reforms will determine Ukraine’s ability to counter threats and will affect the course of the war in coming years. Citizens are urged to remain active and demand necessary changes, as the population itself forms the core of the state.
