Discussions are ongoing in the Bundestag regarding tougher migration policies. The Christian Social Union (CSU) and Christian Democratic Union (CDU) are calling for the deportation of Syrians, stricter regulations for Ukrainian refugees, and the return of able-bodied Ukrainian men to Ukraine to support the country's defense.
These proposals were discussed at a CSU meeting in Bavaria. Additionally, the party intends to require Ukrainians, from April 2025, to use their assets to cover their stay in Germany. CSU is also advocating for the deportation of Syrian and Afghan individuals with minimized social benefits, particularly targeting those who have committed crimes.
The document urges limits on refugees’ travel to their home countries and proposes ending the uncontrolled migration flow. According to the CSU, the civil war in Syria has ended, and most Syrians should return home.
CDU leader Friedrich Merz asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to help reduce the number of young Ukrainians coming to Germany. He also announced possible changes to social benefits for Ukrainians, aiming to encourage job searching.
These proposals have ignited public debate on their fairness and the potential consequences for migrants and Ukraine’s defense efforts.
