Peace Talks Between Ukraine, Russia, and the US: Current Status and Key Risks

Experts discuss the status of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia mediated by the US, risks of disruption, and the role of key players.

Recently, active discussions have been taking place regarding the peace process between Ukraine and Russia under US mediation. Experts emphasize that Russia is not participating in a full-fledged negotiation process; most contacts occur between the US and Ukraine. Russian representatives have not officially recognized peace plans initiated by third parties, and according to experts, are stalling or using information tactics without real progress in talks.

Meanwhile, the US tries to serve as a mediator, although its role is somewhat limited as a main provider of financial and military aid to Ukraine. Despite many ideas coming from various international platforms, a comprehensive negotiation format with direct participation from Russia and Ukraine has not been achieved. In this context, Kyiv insists on clear security guarantees, while Moscow demands control over parts of Ukrainian territory in any deal.

Moscow may be planning a large-scale provocation during Julian calendar Christmas, possibly causing casualties, to discredit Ukraine during the talks. Russian special services might use Western drone debris and symbolic sites on occupied territories or within Russia to fake Ukrainian involvement. Ukrainian intelligence warns about such risks.

Major outstanding issues in the talks include territories and security guarantees for Ukraine. Media note that the peace plan, which was intended to be completed soon, remains unresolved with key points still under dispute. Ukrainian and Western experts argue that only constructive dialogue, considering the positions of all parties, can advance toward a real agreement.
