Key Political Events: Changes in the Security Service of Ukraine, Trump’s Statements, Strikes on Ukraine, Protests in Iran

An overview of personnel changes in Ukraine’s Security Service, statements by Donald Trump, attacks on Ukraine, the situation in Venezuela, and protests in Iran.

On January 5, Valeriy Klychok discussed recent developments in domestic and foreign politics. The spotlight was on shifts in the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU): According to media, Vasyl Maliuk agreed to resign as head of the SBU. Major General Yevhen Khmara may temporarily take over, but there is no official confirmation yet. President Zelensky earlier stressed that all leadership changes at the SBU would be implemented and that Oleksandr Poklad could be considered for the role. The final decision on dismissal must be made by the Verkhovna Rada.

Klychok then addressed international affairs. Donald Trump, in a new statement, doubted Ukraine’s involvement in the attack on Putin’s residence, noting he received false information from the Russian leader. Trump also claimed the US needs control over Greenland, discussed a possible special operation in Colombia, and commented on the situation in Venezuela, where the US offered Maduro exile. Venezuela’s Vice President, Delcy Rodriguez, expressed readiness for a dialogue with the US.

Ukraine continues to face missile and drone attacks. Overnight, Russian forces struck several Ukrainian regions, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv. These attacks resulted in casualties and injuries, as well as damage to residential buildings and civil infrastructure.

In Iran, mass protests demanding the resignation of the government continue, with casualties and arrests rising. Western media say Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has prepared an escape plan to Moscow if the crisis escalates. The US signaled a possible response if the protests are violently suppressed.

The political situation in several countries remains tense as leadership changes and international statements by world leaders play a significant role in shaping the global landscape.
