Key Events of the Day: Security Guarantees for Ukraine, Drone Attacks, US Operation in Venezuela, and US Interest in Greenland

On January 6, a meeting of a coalition of Western countries is taking place in Paris to work out security guarantees for Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky is participating, and a document detailing European security commitments is expected. Prior consultations were held in Kyiv, and military chiefs from coalition countries have already met in Paris.

This summit coincides with new drone attacks: Ukrainian drones struck several targets in Russia, including in Tver, Bashkortostan, Lipetsk, and Leningrad regions, mainly oil refineries and depots. In response, Russian drones targeted Ukraine, with 61 launched, 53 intercepted, and eight hitting their targets.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned of potential energy and humanitarian crises in Ukraine due to attacks on civilian infrastructure and accused Russian leadership of war crimes. French President Macron said he hopes to present concrete security commitments after the Paris talks.

Internationally, Donald Trump stated that the US is not at war with Venezuela but does not rule out another military operation if acting President Delcy Rodríguez halts cooperation with Washington. Former President Maduro remains in US custody and pleads not guilty. The US State Department emphasized the law enforcement nature of its operation, while US and European leaders continue to view Maduro as illegitimate.

Meanwhile, the US is increasing rhetoric about taking control over Greenland. The Trump administration is considering an association agreement granting the US defense control over Greenland while preserving the island’s internal self-government. This causes concern in Europe and Denmark.

In Ukraine, there are ongoing personnel changes, with new appointments in the Security Service (SBU) and upcoming diplomatic rotations. The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces also pointed out problems with basic military training and announced reforms to address them.
