The arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro following a US military operation has triggered significant international reactions and is seen as an important geopolitical signal. Experts note that such events not only affect Venezuela but also weaken Russia’s position in international negotiations, including those over Ukraine.
Western leaders generally emphasize the need to observe international law and establish an orderly transition of power. The US and certain Latin American countries have expressed support for changes in Venezuela, while Russia and China have condemned Washington's actions and called for Maduro's release.
Analysts stress that, for Donald Trump, Venezuela has become a foreign policy 'trump card' that provides additional leverage in negotiations. Russia’s loss of regional partners is viewed as a blow to its global stance, which could accelerate the negotiation process on Ukraine.
Major European countries take a cautious approach, highlighting the legal complexity and stressing the importance of democratic processes. It is also noted that Venezuela’s potential new administration is oriented toward cooperation with the US. Nevertheless, the situation remains unstable, with public support for Maduro among his followers sharply declining.
Most Latin American countries supported the US actions, as seen in widespread demonstrations. The global media highlight Maduro’s record of authoritarianism, human rights abuses, and electoral fraud. According to the New York Times, at least 40 people were killed during the operation. Maduro was transferred to New York and officially charged, while Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has taken over presidential duties.
Amid these developments, Russia’s political position regarding Ukraine becomes more complicated, as weakening influence in Latin America means fewer resources and allies. Meanwhile, the US is increasing pressure on other regional states, including Iran, Cuba, and even Greenland, signaling changes in the global balance of power that will likely affect negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine.
