Security guarantees for Ukraine: US, European positions and prospects for the peace plan

Discussion on Ukraine's prospects for receiving security guarantees from the US, EU and other countries as part of the peace plan, Russia's response.

A coalition of countries is negotiating on providing Ukraine with security guarantees if a 20-point peace plan is adopted by Russia. However, the likelihood of Moscow accepting the plan is low; the Kremlin reportedly believes Ukraine can be taken over quickly, using talks to delay potential sanctions.

The US position remains unclear—the American side is still negotiating and is not ready to formalize any commitments. European countries are more explicit: France, the UK, and Canada have expressed readiness to deploy troops in Ukraine, while Belgium and Sweden offer aviation support and demining assistance. Italy has declined active involvement.

Ukraine insists security guarantees should cover the entire country. From the US, there are so far only declarations promising financial and economic support, but no specific security measures.

Security guarantees are linked to the peace plan, with Ukraine seeking clear and reliable commitments, as past experiences showed Russia could break its promises. The Kremlin demands concessions from Ukraine, including on territorial issues, which remains the main obstacle to peace.

Globally, pressure on Russia increases through sanctions and economic issues within BRICS. European partners continue supporting Ukraine, emphasizing the need for proper security guarantees for the country's and continent's stability.
