US Approves Draconian Sanctions: 50% Tariff on Russian Oil, Greenland Considered for Ukraine Security Guarantees

The US Congress has approved tough sanctions on buyers of Russian oil. Europe is considering a Greenland swap for Ukraine's security guarantees, while Zelensky negotiates in Cyprus.

The United States has passed an anti-Russian law imposing strict sanctions on companies and countries that purchase Russian oil. The key development is former President Donald Trump’s endorsement of the bill, paving the way for a final vote in the US Congress.

The initiative sets an additional emergency tariff of 50% on India, China, and Brazil if they buy Russian oil. US officials are promoting the supply of Venezuelan oil as an alternative, aiming to financially constrain Russia and reduce its ability to fund military action against Ukraine.

Lindsey Graham and other prominent politicians emphasize that Russian oil could become as “toxic” on the market as narcotics if these sanctions become law. Two Russian oil tankers have already been detained in the US.

In parallel, a diplomatic idea has emerged in Europe: the possibility of swapping Greenland for security guarantees for Ukraine. The issue remains open, with European officials stating that discussions are ongoing. The US suggests that Greenland could become independent or its status could change, highlighting complex diplomatic maneuvering.

Meanwhile, President Zelensky is in Cyprus, which is preparing to assume the EU Council presidency. Ukraine is seeking to strengthen its negotiation position on EU membership during this period.

At the same time, the US is discussing increasing its defense budget and continues to debate issues related to Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba. Protests in Iran persist, with Western powers seeking to sever Iran’s ties with China and Russia.

The article’s author stresses that intensifying pressure on Russia remains key to resolving many current geopolitical issues, with Ukraine playing a crucial role in this dynamic.
