Global politics and Donald Trump's rhetoric: impact on Europe, Greenland and Ukraine

Interview with expert Hlib Ostapenko on Donald Trump's rhetoric, European and global reactions to Greenland, Venezuela, and Ukraine.

On January 8, the Veza Center for Public Analytics held an interview with political consultant and foreign policy expert Hlib Ostapenko. The discussion focused on the new rhetoric of Donald Trump regarding Europe, Russia, Greenland, and other global political issues.

Ostapenko noted that Trump's latest statements raise many questions about the stability of the world order established after World War II. He highlighted that remarks by Trump and his team, especially regarding control over Greenland, caused concern in Europe and prompted a reaction from Denmark's prime minister. The possibility of stationing US troops, air defense systems, or economic cooperation should, according to the expert, be discussed as a partnership among allies, not through forceful rhetoric.

The studio also mentioned Cyprus as an example of the complexities within NATO and historical precedents of great power conflicts. Ostapenko drew attention to Turkey's multifaceted foreign policy, which could influence future geopolitical scenarios. He emphasized the need to focus not only on military but also economic aspects, as Europe continues to seek new security guarantees, particularly regarding support for Ukraine.

The expert then explained the US actions in Venezuela, which put pressure on Russia's geopolitical positions in Latin America. According to him, this stance benefits Ukraine by increasing pressure on the Kremlin and limiting Russia's ability to influence world events. Ostapenko added that current US rhetoric should be viewed through the lens of realpolitik rather than emotion, as the EU requires a more decisive approach amid rising external threats.

In conclusion, the experts agreed that the future of events around Greenland remains uncertain. However, Europe needs to make concrete decisions in response to the changing rhetoric from the US. Ukrainians should monitor these developments, as they have direct implications for the country's security and geopolitical stability.
