On January 9, Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack on Ukraine, firing 36 missiles and 242 drones. Ukrainian defenses intercepted 226 drones and a number of missiles. Kyiv region was the main target, with four people killed and 25 injured in the capital. Large parts of Kyiv were left without water, power, or heating; public transportation was suspended. In Kryvyi Rih, one person was killed and 23 injured, including six children. Thirteen apartment buildings and 21 vehicles were damaged.
In response, Ukrainian forces struck a Russian fuel echelon in occupied Crimea. There were also major power outages reported in parts of Belarus and Oryol region in Russia.
Following the attacks, Ukraine initiated an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council. It was also revealed that a bilateral US-Ukraine security agreement may be signed next week. President Zelensky plans to visit Washington and potentially meet Donald Trump at the Davos Forum.
In Paris, representatives of Russia, the USA, and Ukraine discussed a framework peace agreement, which has reportedly already been sent to Moscow for review.
Donald Trump, in interviews with Fox News and The New York Times, stated he is not setting deadlines for resolving the conflict but believes a security deal is close. He expressed support for tougher anti-Russia sanctions, discussed US oil shipments from Venezuela, announced plans to raise the US military budget in 2027, and reiterated US readiness to support Ukraine’s defense, stating he does not expect a renewed Russian invasion.
Trump also commented on negotiations regarding Greenland, including the potential for one-time payments to residents should the territory join the US, though no decisions have been finalized. Separately, President Zelensky appointed new regional governors for Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, and Chernivtsi.
