Zelensky and Trump to Meet: Donbas Free Economic Zone, US Investments and Iran Unrest

Zelensky discussed with Bloomberg the potential Donbas free economic zone supported by the US, possible Trump meeting, security guarantees, and investments. The situation in Iran and Venezuela, as well as attacks on Ukraine, were also addressed.

On January 10, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave an interview to Bloomberg, revealing plans to create a free economic zone in Donbas. The proposal, originating from the US, has been tentatively accepted by Ukraine. Zelensky may meet with Donald Trump by the end of the month to negotiate security guarantees and a recovery plan, although European partners are insisting on changing the meeting venue.

The US and Ukraine are considering signing a Prosperity Agreement worth $800 billion to support Ukraine's reconstruction, possibly at the World Economic Forum in Davos. This deal could attract significant investments to Ukraine, primarily targeting industrial regions.

The concept of a tax-free business zone in Donbas is under discussion to stimulate regional recovery after hostilities end. Ukraine is awaiting Russia’s response to the peace plan and is considering scenarios of troop withdrawal or maintaining positions along the front line.

Trump has recently criticized Europe for insufficient support of Ukraine, suggesting Russia and China buy oil from the US. He is also conducting talks with American businessmen on investing in the oil sector, particularly in Venezuela.

Recent events at the front include mass attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and Ukrainian strikes on Russian targets. Ukraine's air defense destroyed most of 121 Russian drones in the past day.

Venezuela and Iran remain in the international spotlight. The US is preparing to resume embassy operations in Venezuela. In Iran, protests have continued for 13 days, with over 50 casualties. Trump warned Iranian authorities of possible US intervention should force be used against protesters.
