In response to Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, Ukrainian defense forces carried out a strike on the Novocherkassk thermal power plant in Russia's Rostov region. The plant suffered damage, though it was not completely destroyed. The Novocherkassk TPP, with a capacity of 2.2 GW, is crucial for the region, which already experiences electricity shortages.
Following the strikes on energy infrastructure, Belgorod region faced serious disruptions in electricity, heating, and water supply. Residents took to the streets, complaining about the lack of power in their homes. This situation led to long queues at gas stations as people sought fuel for generators, causing further shortages. Shops were closed, making it difficult to buy food and water.
Such strikes on infrastructure have become a response to Russia’s regular large-scale attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities. Russian officials criticized the retaliation as “terrorist,” even while publicly declaring their own attacks on Ukraine. The Ukrainian side emphasizes the need to support the military, particularly by fundraising for drones used in defense and counterattacks.
Experts note, however, that achieving a strategic effect would require much larger resources and sustained efforts. Ukrainian forces call for continued support, as asymmetric actions can shift the course of the war, even with limited means.
