Main news of the day: Kyiv school attack, attacks on energy and new Russian tactics

Overview of January 12 events: attack in a Kyiv school, strikes on infrastructure, rising autogas prices, new Russian drones.

As of January 12, several notable events occurred in Ukraine. In Kyiv, a shocking incident took place at a school: a 14-year-old student attacked his teacher and a classmate with a knife. Both victims were hospitalized, while the attacker injured himself and remains under medical care. His actions are qualified as attempted murder, and a criminal case has been initiated. The boy's phone was found to have correspondence with enemy special services; investigators are clarifying his motives.

Meanwhile, Kyiv's heat and power plants suffered serious damage from heavy Russian shelling. Equipment at CHP-5 and CHP-6 could not be fully restored, and some districts still experience outages of heating and electricity. Protective structures are powerless against ballistic missiles. Utility workers, power engineers, and rescuers are working around the clock to restore services.

Russian attacks also hit railway infrastructure: several trains are delayed or rerouted, and bus transfers have been arranged. Passengers are advised to check schedules and be prepared for changes in routes and long delays.

Autogas prices have jumped by nearly 4 UAH per liter over the past weeks due to new taxes. The average price is now about 38 UAH per liter, with some stations already exceeding 40 UAH. Experts expect prices for other fuels to rise in 2026 due to tax changes.

Ukrainian intelligence discovered a new modification of the Russian “Geran-2” drone equipped with thermobaric explosives and a portable anti-aircraft missile system. Such a drone can strike both ground and air targets simultaneously, indicating a new phase in Russian combat tactics.

RBC-Ukraine reports that Moscow plans to occupy the entire Donetsk region by April 1, though analysts consider this unrealistic. Russia’s strategy is attritional warfare and tactical maneuvers rather than breakthroughs, along with increased pressure near Zaporizhzhia. Experts see several possible scenarios including a protracted conflict, escalation, or a frozen war.

The US has announced preparations for a military operation against Iran amid mass protests resulting in over 500 deaths. The American president may take new actions, while Iran has begun to jam the internet using satellites. Iran’s opposition leader has called for a national uprising.
