Main News of January 13: New Russian strikes, energy attacks, evacuation from Iran, and consequences for Ukraine

A review of key events: Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, civilian casualties, a drone factory explosion, Russia-Iran cooperation, protests in Iran, and supermarket closures in Kyiv.

On January 13, Russian forces launched new attacks on Ukraine’s energy and residential infrastructure. Notably, a children’s sanatorium and a Nova Poshta postal terminal in the Kharkiv region were hit, resulting in four deaths and six injuries. Nova Poshta announced it would reimburse customers for lost parcels.

Kyiv region also saw destruction and fires in both residential and industrial facilities. In Vyshhorod district, a residential building caught fire during shelling, but there were no casualties. Russia again conducted massive attacks on DTEK thermal power plants, causing significant damage to power station equipment—the eighth such attack since October 2025. Power supply restorations in Kyiv may be delayed.

Air defense destroyed 240 of 293 drones and 7 of 25 missiles. A new massive missile strike with Tu-95MS strategic bombers targeting western Ukrainian regions is anticipated.

In Kyiv, a serious incident occurred at a school: a 14-year-old attacked a classmate and a teacher with a knife. Both remain in serious condition; the attacker is in custody. Police have seized evidence and are investigating the case.

Inside Russia, Ukrainian special services and the Navy struck a drone manufacturing plant producing drones used for attacks on Ukraine.

According to Bloomberg, Iran sold Russia about $2.7 billion worth of weaponry, including hundreds of ballistic missiles and millions of munitions, signaling a deep strategic partnership between the two countries.

The US president imposed a 25% tariff on partners doing business with Iran to increase pressure and isolate the country. Meanwhile, large protests over the economic crisis are ongoing in Iran. The US has urgently advised its citizens to evacuate due to threats to life and safety.

Due to emergency power outages in Kyiv and the region, some supermarkets are temporarily closed, though some chains remain open with backup generators.
