Political crisis in Ukraine: Tymoshenko case, conflict in Parliament and the role of NABU

Valeriy Klochuk and Volodymyr Fesenko analyze Ukraine’s political crisis, the Tymoshenko case, NABU’s influence, and developments in Parliament.

On January 14, the Veza Civic Energy Center hosted a discussion between director Valeriy Klochuk and political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko about Ukraine’s political situation. Recent weeks have witnessed not only the active phase of the war but also a surge in anti-corruption activity, especially in Parliament.

A key topic was the search at Batkivshchyna leader Yulia Tymoshenko’s residence. Reportedly, Tymoshenko was served a notice of suspicion for allegedly trying to persuade MPs to join her faction. Fesenko notes such practices have been common in Parliament for decades. In response, Tymoshenko has launched a media and political campaign, blocking Parliament sessions and seeking support among politicians critical of NABU.

The Parliament also faces a crisis of key appointments: the positions of energy and defense ministers remain vacant, which experts say is extremely problematic amid war and an energy crisis.

The balance between political and anti-corruption institutions was also discussed. Fesenko says NABU’s investigations prioritize media and political impact, and the parliamentary situation is becoming increasingly complicated.

Potential transformations in Parliament, the role of situational majorities, and prospects for early elections were considered. Experts believe the parliamentary crisis is deepening, and a solution is only possible after the war ends and new elections are held.

Concluding, participants invited public comments on the Tymoshenko situation, highlighting its significance in the current political context.
