Ukraine and the US begin new round of talks in Miami: security guarantees and global context

Ukraine and the US hold talks in Miami to discuss security guarantees and an economic prosperity plan. The dialogue covers investment, support, and the wider roles of Russia, Europe, and the US in peace efforts.

A Ukrainian delegation consisting of Rustem Umerov, Kyrylo Budanov, and Davyd Arakhamia has launched a new round of talks with the US in Miami. The discussions are focused on developing a security guarantees agreement for Ukraine and an economic prosperity plan. The total expected investment and aid under these agreements could reach $800 billion.

The negotiations take place against the backdrop of renewed rhetoric from Russia. Vladimir Putin has reiterated the need to address the broader security configuration of Europe, not only the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Russian officials such as Lavrov and Peskov suggest they are seeking compromise, but the Kremlin insists on recognition of Russia's interests.

The Trump administration, meanwhile, is advancing diplomatic and economic cooperation with Ukraine, including major investments in strategic sectors such as lithium extraction. Security guarantees remain a central issue, with talks ongoing with European partners.

Internationally, new diplomatic formats are emerging, including global platforms led by the US that may create fresh opportunities for negotiations and international support for Ukraine. The outcome, however, largely depends on the balance of power and political will of all parties involved. For Moscow, an agreement with Washington is vital, while Ukraine seeks to win time and strengthen its bargaining position.

Europe and China remain significant players, affecting the economic and political landscape. While the duration of the war and nature of international support remain uncertain, the Ukrainian delegation is determined to pursue outcomes that enhance the country's security and prosperity.
