Vitaliy Portnykov analyzes revelations from businessman Serhiy Vaganyan concerning former SBU chief Ivan Bakanov and his associates. The ongoing scandal about possible corruption has reignited public debate, highlighting more systemic issues within Ukrainian society and the government apparatus than offering new facts.
Portnykov points out that the responsibility for recurring crises lies partly with citizens who often neglect considering the consequences of their electoral choices. He approaches the topic not through the lens of individual personalities, but by examining the political context following 2019, when Volodymyr Zelensky, a political outsider, assumed the presidency, and his inexperienced associates filled top government posts.
The expert stresses that fundamental problems arise from a lack of professionalism in government and a societal tendency to entrust political power to non-politicians. As a result, corruption and inefficiency proliferate, exacerbating state crises and undermining public trust.
Portnykov emphasizes that real reforms are possible only through an injection of professionalism and consolidation of pro-state forces. Elections alone cannot solve the issue, especially during wartime, when both internal and external risks are rising.
He urges both society and politicians to act responsibly and to honor the sacrifices made by Ukrainian soldiers. In conclusion, Portnykov asserts that only unity and professional governance will enable Ukraine to overcome its current crisis and safeguard its statehood.
