On the “Fabrika Novyn” channel, Valeriy Klochok, head of the Veza Analytical Center, shared his perspective on the latest wave of attacks on Ukraine. He emphasized the lack of sufficient preparation by authorities at all levels, especially in major cities, resulting in significant challenges for civilians.
Klochok noted the resilience of Ukrainians who continue daily life amid strikes. The expert believes that Russia’s targeting of infrastructure aims to destabilize Ukraine internally and undermine trust in the government, rather than to influence US policy or global events directly.
The peace process was also discussed. Klochok highlighted that a meeting between Zelensky and Trump at Davos is not scheduled, and following a Ukrainian delegation’s visit to the US, no significant progress was achieved. According to Klochok, for Trump, the war in Ukraine is just one element of broader global politics. The US puts pressure predominantly on Ukraine, while European countries support only enough to prevent escalation, not to resolve the conflict.
The idea of creating a military alliance with Ukraine without US participation was touched upon. Klochok sees this as unlikely due to a lack of political will in Europe, even though such alliances are technically feasible; he cited the example of the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force and other existing military-political blocs involving the US.
Regarding the Peace Council possibly initiated by Trump with Russia and Belarus, Klochok sees it as an attempt to alter decision-making approaches in international relations, moving some functions away from the UN and limiting China’s influence.
Klochok also commented on the US strategic interest in Greenland, noting growing competition with Russia and China in the Arctic. For Trump, this represents a matter of security and influence in the Western Hemisphere.
Summing up Trump's year as president, Klochok underlines the strength of American institutions and the difficulty Trump faces in implementing his political agenda, especially regarding Ukraine. He advises Ukraine to take initiative in forming security alliances and to prepare for a long-term situation.
