Peace Talks Continue: Ukraine, US, and Russia Positions at Davos Forum

An overview of statements by Kyrylo Budanov and US and Russian representatives regarding peace negotiations at the Davos Forum.

At Davos, Head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office Kyrylo Budanov emphasized that the peace negotiation process concerning the war in Ukraine is ongoing, with Ukraine maintaining its place at the table alongside other partners. Budanov refrained from making predictions about when peace might be achieved, highlighting the complexity of the situation.

During the forum, US Presidential Envoy Steve Withow met with Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, calling the meeting positive. Dmitriev noted growing recognition of the Russian view on ending the war. However, experts stress that Russia often makes optimistic statements without showing real progress at the negotiating table.

The main obstacle to meaningful negotiation remains the absence of a response from President Vladimir Putin of Russia to joint proposals by the US and Ukrainian presidents. Budanov argues that without Russia's willingness to engage in substantive talks, a real peace process cannot begin.

The Davos agenda also included plans for Ukraine's postwar reconstruction. Despite ideas for large-scale investments, progress depends on achieving a resolution to the conflict, which remains elusive.

A key factor that could influence Russia's stance is US military support for Ukraine, especially the potential provision of advanced weaponry—a topic that Russia seeks to block diplomatically. The US continues to approach the issue with caution due to the complex geopolitical context.

Experts also stress the importance of Ukrainian unity and avoiding internal disputes during this period of international uncertainty as crucial for moving toward peace.
