On January 21, Donald Trump spoke at the Davos forum, expressing his wish to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. At the time, Zelensky’s advisers indicated that he was in Kyiv, though there is speculation about a possible meeting in Davos.
Trump stated that a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia is nearly ready, referencing US envoy Steve Witkoff, who, together with Kushner, is set to go to Moscow at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invitation. Before their trip, a meeting with Ukrainian officials is planned. After Moscow, their delegation will head to the UAE for further negotiations. According to Witkoff, the parties are close to a deal, and Putin appears open to freezing the war.
Trump also raised the issue of Greenland, claiming the territory should belong to the United States, but emphasized that the US would not use military force. He warned that Europe might lose control and security if it refuses negotiations. Trump's speech was highly anticipated and the forum hall was overcrowded.
On Ukraine, Trump stressed the sides are moderately close to a peace agreement, but deep animosity between the leaders complicates talks. The US president said the suffering population is senseless and pressed for negotiations. He also announced a meeting with Zelensky, though official reports placed Zelensky elsewhere that day.
The forum included criticisms of France and its president Macron, discussions on additional tariffs, and European stances on sanctions against Russia. Trump highlighted ongoing European purchases of Russian oil and recent approval by the European Parliament to accelerate a 90 billion euro credit for Ukraine, though funding sources remain unclear.
In Ukraine, parliament supported reforms boosting mobilization, and an anti-corruption court reviewed a major case of alleged bribery involving former officials close to the Presidential Office. Meanwhile, restoration of energy infrastructure continues in Kyiv after bad weather, and Russian attacks persist, including a recent strike in Kramatorsk.
