US Special Representative Steve Withoff announced after meeting the Ukrainian delegation in Davos that negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war are in their final stage. Withoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump, are set to arrive in Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Prior to this, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to meet in Davos to agree on a joint approach to end the conflict, which will later be presented to the Russian side in Moscow.
Withoff also revealed a US economic plan, including the creation of a duty-free zone for Ukraine and up to $600 billion in investments to support Ukraine's post-war recovery.
Although a formal agreement for the US-Ukraine investment fund was expected during the Davos meetings, no document was signed. Nevertheless, the US remains committed to supporting Ukraine after the war concludes.
The final decision on ending the war depends on Russia. President Putin stated he is ready to use frozen Russian assets in the US for restoring war-affected regions, after a peace agreement is reached. However, it remains unclear which territories he refers to, and he has not withdrawn prior demands concerning areas controlled by the Ukrainian government.
The next negotiation phase involves working groups from the US, Ukraine, and Russia meeting in Abu Dhabi to detail a possible peace agreement. The US plans to act as mediator between Kyiv and Moscow.
Experts note Russia may be stalling the negotiation process. The timeframe for working groups and the likelihood of reaching an agreement remain uncertain.
