On January 22, a significant breakthrough in peace talks between Ukraine and Russia was announced in Davos. According to US special envoy Viktor Viktov, both sides are close to agreement, with only one key detail left. Viktov is expected to meet with the Russian president in Moscow soon to resolve this issue, followed by discussions in Abu Dhabi and a planned visit to Kyiv.
There is also talk of possibly lifting US tariffs on Ukrainian goods and supporting the recovery of Ukrainian industry. Former US envoy Keith Keloh stated that peace in Ukraine is possible by autumn if Ukraine endures the winter and gains a strategic advantage in spring. He emphasized that Russia is facing defeat and is under pressure to find a way out of the conflict.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called on the West not to reduce military support for Ukraine, describing it as vital for the security of all Europe. President Volodymyr Zelensky participates in the World Economic Forum and is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump.
Media also reported a proposal from Trump to buy Greenland—offering $1 million to every island resident. Talks are also ongoing about a future agreement on the Arctic and the lifting of tariff threats.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia could contribute $1 billion to Donald Trump’s Peace Council from Russian assets frozen in the US and hinted at using some of these funds to restore Ukrainian territories after peace. These suggestions are causing debate globally.
Despite ongoing diplomacy, Russian attacks in Ukraine continue. In Kryvyi Rih, a ballistic missile struck a residential building, causing injuries, including to children. In Odesa region, a kamikaze drone hit an apartment building, leaving part of the city without power and heat.
The Kyiv mayor reported that around 3,000 buildings still lack heating following recent attacks, with utilities working nonstop to restore heat and power.
Security services detained two Russian intelligence agents gathering information about missile attack consequences in Lviv region. Authorities seized evidence of their coordination with Russian handlers, and both have been charged with treason.
