A potential conflict within NATO over Greenland could have seriously affected Western security, but the sides managed to avoid escalation. Donald Trump insisted on US control of Greenland, citing strategic and security interests. For the US, the island is considered a key platform for air defense systems and access to natural resources.
Denmark refused to transfer sovereignty over Greenland but agreed to a framework agreement involving joint use of the territory for US defense infrastructure and resource development. This approach is similar to the UK’s arrangements on Cyprus.
As a result, the US dropped plans for new tariffs on the EU, prompting a positive reaction in markets. European countries remain focused on achieving strategic autonomy, while Ukraine may gain improved trade opportunities with the United States.
The new agreement reduces the risk of internal conflict in NATO and allows Western countries to focus on ongoing challenges, particularly supporting Ukraine and cooperation within the Western bloc.
