Renowned journalist and author Ostap Drozdov, in an exclusive interview for Radio UA Chicago, discussed the political situation involving Ukraine's peace talks with Russia, the role of the US, the challenges facing Ukrainian leadership, and the latest threats on the frontline.
Drozdov highlighted the inconsistency in Ukraine's official statements. President Zelensky has expressed readiness for a personal meeting with Putin, while the Foreign Minister emphasized the need for an international tribunal for Russia and its leader. Drozdov noted that since 2022, a presidential decree formally bans negotiations with Putin, pointing out that media narratives often do not align with real politics.
He also addressed the trilateral settlement model: officials say Ukraine will sign a multi-point peace agreement with the US, and the US separately with Russia. No side can fully impose its terms, so compromise will be inevitable. Drozdov underlines the critical importance of American security guarantees for Ukraine, stating that without the US, no diplomatic resolution is possible.
Regarding military developments, Drozdov pointed out that Russia has significantly modernized its Iskander missiles, Shahed drones have new long-range and reconnaissance capabilities, and there are now technologies for remote mining using fiber-optic drones. Ukraine's air defense currently has no effective answer to these challenges.
Finally, Drozdov commented on Russia's media resurgence on the geopolitical stage, mentioning the White House display of a photo from last year’s Trump-Putin meeting and the intentions of Western leaders to resume dialogue with the Kremlin. He says this reflects the global trends in world politics.
The Radio UA Chicago interviewer concluded the conversation with wishes for peace and stability in Ukraine.
