Zelensky announces date for Ukraine-Russia-US peace talks on ending the war

President Zelensky announces new date for trilateral talks with Russia and the US on ending the war. US mediation prospects discussed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced a new date for trilateral talks with Ukrainian, Russian, and American delegations, expected to take place this week, likely on Sunday, February 1. The main goal of the negotiations is to find ways to end the Russia-Ukraine war with US mediation.

Zelensky did not provide details on the exact agenda but emphasized the importance of ensuring that Russia does not use the dialogue to lessen sanctions pressure from the US and other Western countries. Russia continues to put forward various initiatives, including a so-called "peace plan," which did not prevent sanctions against its oil industry.

On the issue of confiscating frozen Russian assets, the US urged the EU to be cautious so as not to impede the peace process. The EU, meanwhile, has allocated 90 billion euros in aid to Ukraine, expecting to recoup the funds via possible reparations from Russia.

Amid persistent Russian attacks, there are rumors Moscow may participate in rebuilding Ukraine's infrastructure, though hostilities continue. According to Zelensky, Russia's main motivation appears to be reducing sanctions pressure and avoiding conflict with the US, especially former President Donald Trump. The outcome of the upcoming talks will clarify Russia's true approach to the war.
