Kremlin Again Invites Zelensky to Moscow: Why This Is Not a Step Toward Peace

Yury Ushakov’s proposal for Zelensky to meet Putin in Moscow highlights the Kremlin's reluctance for genuine negotiations.

Yury Ushakov, an aide to the President of the Russian Federation, has once again proposed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky travel to Moscow to meet with Vladimir Putin. This is not the first such initiative from the Kremlin in response to Zelensky’s readiness for dialogue with Russia.

However, these proposals appear more like mockery, as the Kremlin does not show a true willingness for contact with Ukraine or a real move toward ending the ongoing war. If Putin truly sought peace, a meeting on neutral ground with international mediation, possibly involving former US President Donald Trump, would be expected, as has occurred in other international conflicts.

The invitation to Moscow reveals Russia’s political stance: Ukraine is seen as a sphere of influence, and the offer is interpreted not as an opportunity for a genuine compromise, but rather as a sign of capitulation. Official statements suggest negotiations will continue, but the real goal is seen as gaining time and maintaining relations with the US.

The Kremlin’s public position appears constructive but actually confirms the absence of true willingness to end the war under terms acceptable to Ukraine. Only significant changes in Russia’s political or economic situation could prompt more neutral talks. Ushakov’s current proposal reinforces the established position of the Russian side.
