Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the start of an energy truce between Ukraine and Russia. Although no documents have been signed, a gentlemen's agreement has led to a halt in strikes on energy infrastructure recently. According to the president, this occurred after Donald Trump personally requested Vladimir Putin not to target Ukraine’s energy facilities, which is especially crucial with an upcoming cold snap expected.
Melania Trump has initiated negotiations with the Russian side to secure the return of Ukrainian children taken during the conflict (at least 20,000 children). She stated that her representative is in contact with Moscow, and a positive outcome is expected soon, possibly resulting in the return of some of these children. Zelensky recognized this diplomatic effort as important, while acknowledging the cynical actions of Russia.
Regarding the peace process, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine would not make territorial concessions: out of 20 discussed points, two remain unresolved. The planned meeting in Abu Dhabi, meant to decide further steps, may be postponed due to changing international priorities, particularly the developments between Iran and Israel.
Separately, Russia attempted to leverage Greenland's self-determination case at the UN to support claims on Donbas. UN Secretary-General António Guterres confirmed that Donbas remains an integral part of Ukraine and the principle of state integrity is inviolable.
On the international front, Trump announced new sanctions against Cuba, which could also affect Russian interests given Russia’s close economic and military ties with Cuba. Moldova, meanwhile, set a precedent by confiscating the assets of Russian company Lukoil. Part of these assets went to the state, and management was transferred to an American investment fund. This is seen as an example for future confiscations of Russian assets in Europe for Ukraine’s benefit.
Zelensky also urged attention to the humanitarian situation in occupied territories and highlighted the importance of supporting Ukrainian forces.
