Yesterday, media spread reports about a possible "energy ceasefire" between Ukraine and Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a cautious statement on social media, thanking Donald Trump for his support. Earlier, Trump said he had asked Russian President Putin not to strike Ukraine.
However, the issue sparked doubts due to conflicting statements. Zelensky emphasized that no direct agreement with the Russians was reached – talks took place through the American side. Kremlin spokesman Peskov confirmed that Russia had agreed to temporarily refrain from attacks until February 1, allegedly to create favorable conditions for negotiations. At the same time, this arrangement is not official and applies for a limited time only.
Last night, there were no recorded strikes on energy facilities, although Russia did attack Ukrainian territory with missiles and drones, and Ukrainian air defense shot down most of the drones. There was no official confirmation of a mutual ceasefire affecting energy infrastructure. Russia claimed to have shot down Ukrainian drones, but these reports have not been independently verified.
Comments from both Zelensky and Trump stand out. Trump stated that, at his request, Russia would not attack for a week, but the Ukrainian side was unaware of such an agreement and did not officially confirm it. The Kremlin's position is to interpret the situation favorably, retrospectively supporting diplomatic contacts.
The White House also stated that negotiations are progressing positively. American officials noted progress in the peace process for Ukraine, although territorial issues and security guarantees for Ukraine remain key.
It should also be noted that the date of talks in Abu Dhabi may be postponed due to tension between the US and Iran. Zelensky emphasized: control over territories, security guarantees, and no compromises that undermine Ukraine's territorial integrity. The US proposed creating a free economic zone in Donbas, but any decision must be fair and uphold state sovereignty.
The role of China is also highlighted as an important player in international issues. The new date and format for future negotiations are still being determined.
