Ostap Drozdov on the detention of Ukrainian cash couriers in Hungary and the political context

Journalist Ostap Drozdov explains why the detention of Ukrainian cash couriers in Hungary fits into a broader political context ahead of elections.

The recent detention of Ukrainian cash couriers in Hungary has drawn significant attention. Journalist and author Ostap Drozdov, in an interview, stated that such actions fit into the wider political context ahead of Hungary’s elections, increasing tensions between the two countries.

He noted that these types of operations have occurred since 2022, with established routes and procedures. However, the sudden detention of Ukrainian couriers became a trigger for political manipulation, allowing the Hungarian side to intensify its election rhetoric.

Drozdov stressed that the issue is deeper—touching on the transit of Russian oil through Ukraine, which continued even during the war. Only shortly before the elections in Budapest did Ukraine suddenly halt this transit, becoming an additional subject for criticism by Orbán’s government.

According to Drozdov, the situation has now escalated into mutual accusations. He believes a resolution is possible only under external pressure, as Ukraine’s reputation in Europe is currently damaged. Drozdov recommends ending double standards in public communication and adopting a clearer, more consistent stance on economic and foreign policy matters.

It is expected that the situation will not improve before the elections, and allegations of money laundering will continue to be used as a tool of political struggle.

The interview with Ostap Drozdov highlights the importance of a strategic approach to Ukraine’s foreign and information policy.
