In an interview on the "Analyzes" platform, journalist Ostap Drozdov discussed the complex political situation between Ukraine and Hungary. He detailed the recent incident involving Hungarian special services seizing armored cash trucks belonging to a Ukrainian state bank, containing large sums of money and gold. According to Drozdov, Budapest's actions go beyond ordinary politics and resemble a criminal thriller.
Drozdov stressed that Ukraine only stopped the transit of Russian oil to Europe in January 2026, although this issue had not been seriously raised before. At the same time, the country remains dependent on electricity imports from Hungary and has sensitive relations with the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia.
The expert described the numerous internal fronts Ukraine faces: military, economic, political, as well as issues of corruption and political competition. He emphasised the impact of external factors—pressure from Russia, unresolved matters with the US, and conflicts with neighbouring countries.
The conversation also touched on international politics, including the impact of upcoming European elections, the actions of Viktor Orbán's government, and potential Russian meddling in foreign elections. Drozdov noted that Ukraine has very limited leverage over Budapest aside from politicising oil transit, which may ultimately hurt Ukraine itself.
The second part of the interview analysed the US's global role and the peculiarity of Donald Trump's policies. According to Drozdov, Trump acts predictably in the interests of the US, while current geopolitical processes are shaping a multipolar world with new centers of influence.
In conclusion, Drozdov underlined that modern global politics has become more direct and tough. Ukraine finds itself in the "second league" of global affairs; its main task is to act cautiously and gradually resolve conflicts with stronger neighbours, relying on the support of international partners.
