Ukrainian Drones Strike Primorsk Port in Leningrad Oblast: Impact on Russian Economy and Society

Ukrainian drones launched a massive attack on the Primorsk port in Russia's Leningrad region, sparking a major fire and affecting Russia's oil exports. The incident also sheds light on internal economic and social tensions within Russia, including internet restrictions and public discontent.

This morning, residents in Russia’s Leningrad region, especially at airports, experienced disruptions due to Ukrainian drone attacks. Ukrainian drones launched a powerful strike on the Primorsk port, resulting in a major fire and heavy smoke at one of Russia’s largest oil export hubs.

Primorsk port is a key point for the export of crude oil and diesel to European and global markets, serving as the terminal of the Baltic Pipeline System. Up to 1 million barrels of crude oil and about 300,000 barrels of diesel fuel are loaded daily. Infrastructure damage at the port forces Russian companies to reduce oil production, as pipelines cannot serve as storage, affecting the profitability of extraction.

The increasing frequency and intensity of drone strikes on Russian oil and gas infrastructure weaken Russia’s export potential and create additional economic challenges as the Russian economy is already in crisis. These actions aim to restrict Russia’s financial resources amid rising oil prices and growing military spending.

Within Russia, economic and social problems continue. The Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, one of the country’s largest steel producers, is reducing output and laying off employees. Authorities have imposed restrictions on both mobile and home internet, and the forced seizure of cattle from rural residents has sparked public anger and protests.

Against the backdrop of successful strikes, Ukrainian troops continue to receive substantial support from volunteers and citizens to procure FPV drones. Military units express gratitude for the aid, which significantly enhances their combat capabilities. The war initiated by Russia is bringing significant losses and compounding internal problems for the country.
